Diary of Alexis Frye

February 4
1900
Sunday morning Ernest Lee Conant and Alexis E. Frye had first interview in regard to educating ten or twenty bright Cuban teachers in the United States. This was the germ of my thought to carry a thousand or more teachers to Harvard. I wrote to Pres. C.W. Eliot, of Harvard, today saying that if he would give free instruction in Harvard for six weeks I would guarantee voyage. I held letter till I consulted with Genl Wood. He gave cordial consent. See Feb. 15, 1900. See “Album of Expedition of Cuban Teachers,” p. 2, for details of origin of expedition. See Feb. 6, 1900, also Oct. 7, 1899.
