Diary of Alexis Frye

1900

Mar. 9 Sec’y of War Root having requested a report on the schools of Cuba, I sent this day, from Havana, the following: “Hon. Elihu Root, – Sec’y of War, Washington, D.C. Sir: I have the honor to make the following report: - Your orders were: Make the Cubans your friends; lead them; do not try to drive them; get the schools open. …… Every Cuban is my friend; absolute liberty given to teachers to use their own methods of teaching (see p. iii of manual); to date 3025 schools with 113,900 pupils of record; today’s report indicates 125,000. I have the honor to be. - - Respectfully Yours, Alexis E. Frye, Supt. schools of Cuba.”

1907

Charles Frye (son of Alexis E. Frye) born in Ingham house (same house as Carmen) Highland, Cal. Dr. C.A. Sanborn attending, nurse was Mabel Garth. Charles b. Saturday.

1916

Teresa A. Frye and dau. Carmen wrote home from Cardenas, Cuba saying she was must stay in Cuba till after 1st of April.
