Diary of Alexis Frye

October 11
1899
Wed. sailed on Str. Segurança, [?], for Havana, first trip by me to write school law and course of study for the island. See Sept. 28, 1899. Oct., 15, 1899. T.B. Lawler saw me off on the steamer. Boat started at 3.15 p.m. from Pier 16, foot of Wall St., New York. Weather little foggy, passed Navesink Highlands, Sandy Hook and Lightship; then turned southward on momentous voyage to Cuba, not knowing what lay ahead of me, but fired with resolve to do a duty. Weather had been mild; ocean had no swell, as the Shamrock: Columbia races had been put off four days for lack of wind.
