Diary of Alexis Frye

October 14
1899
On Ward Line Steamer, in route from New York to Havana, Cuba. Saturday. Flocks of flying fish, like huge butterflies, rise from the sea, skim along 20 to 50 ft. or more and slip back into the water. Forenoon, still the blue water and gulf weed. White caps look like seagulls. Saw seven diff. rainstorms at one time at one time. About 3 p.m. sighted Florida coast and ran into schools of dolphins. Towards evening water bec. green and we are between gulf stream and coast off Jupiter Inlet, seeing sand dunes. Can see palms along shore for miles.
