Saturday, had long interview with Gen’l John R. Brooke, Havana, about school law drawn up under supervision of Sr. Nicolas Heredia. It was decided to lay it aside. Gen’l Brooke told me it was to be signed Monday, Oct. 30, unless I could then present a better. I went to Hotel Pasaje, my room, carrying candles to enable me to write after lights were turned off, and I wrote with pen that afternoon (beginning about 4 o’clock); wrote ten hours into the night, till 4 a.m., then up at it again at 8 a.m. Oct. 29.
