The most thought-provoking histories are colored in grey, not black and white. Tales with clear moral lessons are important. But those historical chapters that leave us unsettled arguably teach us (and our students) a more valuable lesson: the omnipresence of ambiguity. The Harvard Cubans is one such story.

Durante la ocupación militar y hasta la aprobación oficial de las primeras Escuelas Normales, en 1915, el interés por la formación del maestro cubano que debía ejercer en la escuela pública, estuvo entre las expresiones más elocuentes del raigal nacionalismo cubano.

La visita de un grupo de maestras cubanas a la Escuela de Verano de Harvard en el año 1900 determinó la consolidación del feminismo y el sufragismo en Cuba, aunque dicha expedición no tenía como primera intención la emancipación de la mujer.
